Biker gang expected to invade Moab tomorrow
|
|
Utah - More than 100 law enforcement officers are converging on southeastern Utah, bracing for an invasion of bikers. It's not the mountain bikers Moab is used to, it's the Bandidos. Several hundred members of the notorious and sometimes violent motorcycle club are coming from all over the world for a meeting.
At one Moab night spot, the welcome mat is out for bikers, but at another popular tavern, it's like they're preparing for Hurricane Bandido. They're shutting down the bar and fencing it off for the next five days.
Shari Beck, with Woody's Tavern, said, "This is their ideal location. They like to put their bikes out where everyone can see and be seen. And it's just, I can't guarantee the safety of my employees."
But at a campground the Bandidos rented, the owners are looking forward to the unknown. Lisa Nelson, with Kane Springs campground, said, "Well, they seem very nice on the phone, so I guess we'll see when they get here."

Circuit Court Judge Arrested for Twice Legal Limit
|
|
doc65 writes "Allen Circuit Judge Thomas Felts, who handles the lion’s share of Allen County’s alcohol-related criminal cases, was arrested in Indianapolis early Friday on drunken driving and public intoxication charges.
When an Indiana Capitol Police officer pulled Felts’ black Lincoln over for failing to use a turn signal on West Market Street, the 53-year-old judge backed into the police car, according to a report from the Indiana State Police.
After Felts failed a field sobriety test, he provided two invalid breath tests and was charged with refusal, according to the report.
Police obtained a search warrant from a Marion County Superior Court judge and took a sample of Felts’ blood at Wishard Memorial Hospital in Indianapolis. The blood sample will be turned over the Indiana University Department of Toxicology for analysis, according to the report.

Officer testified at biker trial
|
|
The Seattle police detective who shot a Hells Angel at a South Dakota bar testified last year in a high-profile federal racketeering and murder trial that sent several former and current members of the motorcycle gang to prison.
Smith, 43, who works in the department's pawnshop unit, took the witness stand in U.S. District Court in Seattle last year during the 11-week trial of four current and former Hells Angels arrested on federal charges. All four defendants went to prison — for terms ranging from seven years to life without parole — for convictions on conspiracy and racketeering charges.
Detective Ron Smith wounded the man early Saturday after he said he was jumped by as many as three Hells Angels at a Sturgis, S.D., bar during the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. South Dakota authorities identified the wounded biker as Joseph McGuire, a Hells Angel from Southern California.

Bandido club set for 'annual conference'
|
|
Law enforcement agencies in southern Utah are ramping up security plans in preparation for a motorcycle rally expected to draw hundreds of members from one of the nation's fastest-growing outlaw biker gangs.
The Moab Police Department and Grand County Sheriff's Office expect 500 to 800 members of the international Bandidos Motorcycle Club to descend on Moab for the group's "annual conference" beginning Thursday and running though Aug. 25, said Moab Police Chief Michael Navarre.
Although the group refers to itself as a club, the Bandido Nation is documented by the U.S. Department of Justice as one of the most visible outlaw motorcycle gangs in the country, along with other "one-percenter" groups like the Hells Angels, Outlaw Motorcycle Club and the Pagans.
The group's reputation for violence was enough for Moab officials to request emergency funding from the Utah Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice to pay for increased law enforcement during the gang's meeting.
The state commission this week approved $55,000 to help pay overtime, lodging and per-diem expenses for law enforcement agencies from around Utah to assist the 14-person Moab Police Department in monitoring the group's activities.

Off-duty Seattle officers to appear
A South Dakota grand jury has begun hearing testimony in the case of an off-duty Seattle police officer who shot and wounded a Hells Angels biker over the weekend during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, authorities said Monday.
Sturgis police investigators forwarded most of their case to the Meade County State's Attorney's Office, Police Chief Jim Bush said. A grand jury convened Sunday to hear testimony from witnesses, including off-duty officers from Seattle, he said.
"There are probably several hours of testimony that have to be presented yet," he said.

Seattle officer held in shooting had been disciplined
|
|
STURGIS, S.D. - An off-duty Seattle police officer involved in the shooting of a motorcycle gang member at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota has been disciplined at least twice.
A Seattle newspaper reports that both episodes occurred in 2005. In the first, the 43-year-old pawnshop detective was disciplined for taunting fans at a Seattle Seahawks playoff game. Later, he was accused of threatening to shoot a Tacoma restaurant manager after being told to leave.

Sturgis bar's staff sensed trouble before shooting
|
|
Sturgis, S.D., and Seattle law enforcement are investigating how an off-duty Seattle police officer allegedly shot a member of the Hells Angels motorcycle club about 1 a.m. Saturday.
The philosophy of the Iron Pigs Motorcycle Club, Seattle chapter, couldn't be more straightforward: to have fun.
"In our professions we are forced to deal with a lot of crap on the job; we don't need it when we play," says the Web site of the club, which is made up of Seattle-area police officers and firefighters.
But work and play collided early Saturday at a bar fight in Sturgis, home to South Dakota's annual legendary, Mardi Gras-like motorcycle rally.

Florida - OCALA - Marion County sheriff's detectives now have a warrant for an Ocala man they believe beat and shot a Summerfield man at a bar last Thursday.
Investigators obtained a warrant for Mark E. "Mean Mark" Walker, 41, who they say shot Joe Money at 301 South Bar in Belleview.
"After an altercation broke out in the bar parking lot, Walker severely battered another man before shooting him in the face," a Sheriff's Office news release states. Money was taken to Munroe Regional Medical Center and later released.
Detectives say Walker is a member of the America Outlaw Association motorcycle gang.

S.D. - Question baffles motorcyclists, police and lawmakers
RAPID CITY, S.D. -- Brian Gruhn, the "chrome consultant" at Black Hills Harley-Davidson, guesses that 80 percent of those who buy a brand new bike from the dealer don't leave without stopping at his desk to upgrade their exhaust system.
They flip through a book the size of a ranch wife's J.C. Penney catalog and consider the options, which can range from $250 to $1,200.

Montana - Hells Angels…Or Just Angels?
|
|
Donna writes "BY: Keriann Lynch
This weekend, as I drove into the southern end of Kalispell, I heard the distinctive sound of rumbling motorcycle pipes behind me. The sight in my rearview mirror was enough to make even the most macho of men a little nervous: Bikers, riding two abreast and eight deep, clad in black leather, bandannas and one particularly intimidating skull mask, were bearing down fast on my little hatchback. From the looks of their heavily tattooed arms and necks, bulging biceps and piercings, these men probably weren't your middle-aged dad gang playing tough with "the boys."

Hells Angels rolling our way
|
|
With hundreds of Hells Angels poised to descend on the Garden City this week, Missoula's top law enforcement officials are waiting to exhale.
For Sheriff Mike McMeekin, the apprehension is business as usual.
Angels or no Angels, McMeekin will have his hands full policing western Montana's annually celebrated Testicle Festival, which gets under way Wednesday at the Rock Creek Lodge. This year, the event coincides with the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club's annual USA Run, when about 400 members of the group and their families are expected to ride into Missoula for a gathering that runs Wednesday through Sunday.

STATES GREEN-LIGHT NEW RED-LIGHT LAWS FOR MOTORCYCLES
|
|
Donna writes "Motorcyclists in a growing number of states are being allowed to go through
red lights when sensors aren't able to detect they are there.
In May, South Carolina became the seventh state to give motorcyclists
license to proceed with caution after stopping when the device that causes
the light to change from red to green doesn't activate, according to a
recent article in USA Today.
